Jonathan D’Costa smiling

I build, test & ship.

Engineering candidate and founder working across CAD, 3D visualisation and software. I’m establishing JDC Ventures to develop engineering-led products and businesses, building on cleanroom tooling, a shipped web app and three years in business operations.

01 / Selected work

Proof over claims.

Three projects that show how I approach a problem: define the constraint, make something concrete, test it in the real context and learn from what fails.

Cravate

One answer to “what should I eat?” matched to budget, kitchen equipment and nearby shops.

Built and shipped end to end as a single-file PWA, with a Cloudflare Worker backend and Gemini API. No accounts, no database and zero cost to the user. Testing caught a recommendation that was pricier and nutritionally worse than what it replaced; the fix was tighter constraints and tests, not more trust.

Assembly jig: prototype to CNC

SolidWorks jigs developed from printed prototype to release for CNC manufacture.

Modelled after learning SolidWorks by reverse-engineering a physical component with vernier calipers. The 3D-printed prototype was checked against the real production equipment in the cleanroom, refined, then released to the machine shop.

Private-label product launch

Supplier negotiation, packaging, FBA compliance, CGI advertising and the unit economics behind the result.

I negotiated price, minimum order and specification directly with manufacturers on Alibaba; validated quality against a comparison sample; designed the packaging; produced a Blender CGI ad that ran as a paid TikTok spot; and ran Amazon advertising. It sold through most of the launch inventory and still lost money. Diagnosing why is the useful result.

02 / Experience

Work with consequences.

A new venture built on practical engineering and commercial experience: production constraints, product launches and decisions that appear in the accounts.

Founder

JDC Ventures · in formation · Frimley

Establishing a home for engineering-led projects and businesses, bringing mechanical design, software, visualisation and commercial operations into one end-to-end approach.

  • Developing a portfolio of products and ventures: define a real problem, build a testable solution and refine it against practical and commercial constraints.
  • The focus spans physical products, digital tools and new commercial ventures, with design, delivery and operations considered together.

Work experience, Micro Electronics

Custom Interconnect · Andover · on site

One-month placement in the Micro Electronics department at the UK’s largest outsourced semiconductor assembly and test facility.

  • Designed assembly jigs in SolidWorks and developed a 3D-printed prototype, validated against production equipment in the cleanroom before refinement and release for CNC manufacture.
  • Trained in SolidWorks by reverse-engineering a physical component using vernier calipers to produce an accurate 3D model.
  • Followed chip-on-board packaging end to end: wafer dicing against customer known-good-die data, die attach to in-house PCBs, wire bonding and glob-top encapsulation.
  • Took part in wire-bonding operations and trained on the wire-bonding machine.
  • Worked to cleanroom discipline: full gowning, ESD control and airborne particle monitoring to maintain ISO 14644-1 classification.
  • Applied Python from GCSE Computer Science to test and debug an existing Tower of Hanoi implementation, working through move validation and state-handling logic.

Business Operations Manager

Jollymart Ltd · Frimley

Ran operations for a UK-registered limited company from age 15: wholesale sourcing, a private-label product launch and day-to-day management across Amazon, eBay and a self-built website.

  • Owned a private-label launch end to end: negotiated price, minimum order quantity and specification directly with manufacturers, then validated supplier quality before committing to a bulk order.
  • Designed private-label packaging and compliance: custom tamper-seal branding, Amazon FBA barcode labelling and an in-pack QR code prompting reviews.
  • Led go-to-market and produced all creative in Blender, including a CGI spot used for a paid TikTok ad.
  • Ran Amazon advertising and diagnosed the launch’s real loss drivers: ad spend outpacing margin, competitive underpricing and a supplier defect rate.
  • Owned bookkeeping and accountant liaison, preparing financial records for statutory filings. Redesigned the reporting format in 2026; the accountant adopted it as the standard going forward.
  • Built the company’s original website manually in Brizy.

Working method

Make it real early.

The common thread across CAD, software and business is not the tool. It is moving from an idea to something that can be checked—and being willing to change the answer when the evidence disagrees.

01

Define the constraint

Dimensions, production equipment, budget, margin, nearby shops: state what the result must survive.

02

Build the testable version

A printed jig, a live PWA or a comparison sample gives the idea somewhere concrete to fail.

03

Use the failure

Refine the jig, tighten the prompt constraints, or change the budget decision. Testing is useful only when it changes the work.

03 / Education

Built on fundamentals.

Maths, physics and chemistry now; design and computer science as the practical base underneath them.
